Bio

Colden, a physician and scientist, became a prominent colonial administrator in New York after emigrating in 1717 to work as a surveyor for Governor Robert Hunter. He served in various capacities including colonial councilor, lieutenant governor, acting governor, and governor. He supported the Stamp Act but tried to compromise with the legislature on the Quartering Act by allowing paper currency, pleasing neither patriots nor the ministry. Retiring in 1775, he died September of 1776.
