Thomas Whately was a member of Parliament from the borough of Ludgershall in Wiltshire. He served as Secretary to the Treasury and sat as a member of the Board of Trade under Prime Minister George Grenville. Under Lord North, was the Under-secretary of State. He authored the pamphlet “The Regulations Lately Made,” a sophisticated defense of the Stamp Act of 1765. Whately also authored “Remarks on The Budget,“ rebutting attacks on Grenville’s financial schemes and defended Greville in “Considerations on the Trade and Finances of the Kingdom.”
