With the weak Henry VI still on the throne, England struggles to hold together. Jack Cade's rebellion threatens stability from below and machinations among the nobles threaten from above, and the play closes with the opening of Wars of the Roses. We might think about how national identity is both created and threatened in moments of conflict, and will surely consider questions about the nature of kingship and what happens when power lands in the hands of those ill suited to bear it.
