Carus was a tireless popularizer of Buddha’s thought and this is a good example of his work. It relates the life of Buddha, contains many examples of his parables, and is lavishly illustrated with numerous etchings by O. Kopetzky.

Buddha (Author)

The Buddha (“Enlightened One”) lived 563-483 BCE. His followers collected his sermons and lessons into numerous works. Two of these, the Life of the Buddha (Buddhacharita) and the Dhammapada, provide much of the material for the Gospel of Buddha.
Paul Carus (Author)

Paul Carus (1852-1919) was a German-American theologian and philosopher. He composed The Gospel of Buddha to introduce Buddhism to a Western audience.
Lao Tzu (Author)

Lao Tzu was the semi-legendary founder of Taoism (or Daoism). His teachings bear a strong resemblance to those of the Buddha, and influenced the development of Buddhism in China.
