Frederick Douglass and abolition

There are numerous illustrations in the British edition of the Frederick Douglass. They are of three types: pictures of famous abolitionists, Douglass visiting graves and memorials of those who had struggled against slavery, or horror pictures of the treatment of slaves. Here are a selection.

   "Whipping Old Barney"
 Thomas Clarkson, the English abolitionist.
William Lloyd Garrison, the American abolitionist.
Harriet Beecher Stowe, the American abolitionist and author of the best-selling anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin.
John Brown, the American abolitionist who advocated the violent overthrow of slavery before the Civil War.
President Abraham Lincoln, "the great emancipator".
