Thomas Rainborough

1610 – 1648

Rainborough was a seaman, rising to the rank of Vice-Admiral of the fleet in 1648, a Colonel in the New Model Army, and member of parliament. He allied himslef with the Levellers and defended their cause in the Putney Debates of 1647. He was assassinated in 1648 and his funeral was used by the Levellers for political purposes.
