Laughlin was head of the University of Chicago Economics Department, founder of its Graduate School of Business, and founder of the Journal of Political Economy. Laughlin brought his interest in monetary systems and the practical workings of free markets to general academic attention in the United States. He brought Thorstein Veblen to the University of Chicago.
