About the Author

Hippolyte Taine (1828-1893) was a historian and philosopher who was one of the primary figures in French Positivism. He began his career writing literary criticism before turning to psychology and then the history of France. Taine wrote a 6 volume analysis of the rise of the modern French state from the Old Regime, through the Revolution, and the modern bureaucratic state state which emerged after napoleon.
