After the death of Oliver Cromwell, one of his sons Richard, assumed the position of Protector of England, Ireland, and Scotland for a period of eight months in 1658-59. He was ridiculed for this by members of the army a this image from the Clarke Collection illustrates. It says "His Highness Hoe. Hoe. Hoe. Protector of Lubberland, and chief Captain of the night Guards."
