In his influential commentaries on the laws of England, The Institutes, Sir Edward Coke (pronounced "Cook") included a splendid and perfectly organized chart showing "the degree of Parentage and of Consanguinities for the better understanding of the Author." (p. 588-89 of Vol. II of The Selected Writings). I'm sure his countless students over the centuries appreciated it.
