On the front page we now list significant anniversaries such as the births and deaths deaths of key figures, and the dates of publication of important books. Here is a summary of those for 2008 and 2009 (which will be completed at the beginning of next year):

The following books and authors should be remembered this year for having reached a significant milestone:

  • the quincentennial of the birth of John Calvin (1509-1564)
  • the quartercentennial of the publication of Shakespeare's Sonnets (1609)
  • the tricentennial of the birth of Abbé de Mably (1709-1785)
  • the semiquincentennial of the birth of Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797)
  • the semiquincentennial of the publication of Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) and Voltaire's Candide (1759)
  • the bicentennial of the death of Thomas Paine (1737-1809)
  • the sesquicentenial of the birth of Frank Taussig (1859-1940), and the deaths of Lord Macaulay (1800-1859) and Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859)
  • the sesquicentenial of the publication of J.S. Mill's On Liberty (1859) and Samuel Smiles' Self-Help (1859)
