Viscount James Bryce (1838-1922) was a British jurist, historian, and statesman who served as England’s ambassador to the United States from 1907-1913. He was particularly concerned with the comparative history of Roman and British law and the development of their respective empires, as well as the emergence of democracies across the world in the modern era. He wrote on the American democratic experiment in much detail and compared its development with similar movements in South Africa and Australia.
