New to the Library: Our 1,000th Book

The OLL is pleased to announce the 1,000 book in our collection. It is a work by the early 19th century English merchant banker and philanthropist Henry Thornton (1760-1815). Thornton was a member of the Clapham Sect of evangelical social reformers who were active in movements such as the abolition of the slave trade. His book, An Enquiry into the Nature and Effects of the Paper Credit of Great Britain (1802) was regarded by Friedrich Hayek as one of the most important books on money and banking in the 19th century.
