The Portable Library of Liberty (PLL) is a selection of books drawn from the broader collection held by the Online Library of Liberty. Some of the features of the PLL include:
- the books are in EBook PDF format (text based)
- they are self-contained, downloadable versions of the HTML books on the OLL website
- they are best read in a PDF viewer such as Adobe Reader (a free download)
- they are fully searchable
- they can be read when you are not connected to the Internet
- they are distributed free of charge upon request on a DVD
- the DVD also contains other material from the OLL website such as the audio tracks (in MP3) from the Intellectual Portrait Series: Conversations with Leading Classical Liberals of Our Time (27 hours)
To request a complimentary copy of the PLL DVD please send your snail mail address to the Editor.

The 5th edition of the Portable Library of Liberty data DVD will be ready for distribution in February 2010. It contains 1,002 full text titles in EBook PDF format, 36 hours of MP3 interviews with classical liberal political philosophers and economists (The Intellectual Portrait Series) and lectures on the thought of Friedrich Hayek (The Legacy of Friedrich Hayek), and a version of our collection of Quotations about Liberty and Power which is designed to run on a data DVD.
This edition of the PLL is not only the
5th edition but also our 50th Anniversary
Edition as Liberty Fund was founded in
1960.
You can request a complimentary copy but please
include your snail mail (i.e. postal) address
with your request so we can ship it to
you.
You can preview the contents of the disk online here and see the complete list of 1,002 full text titles which come with it. It is not recommended that you use this online version of the data DVD as it is designed specifically to work from the DVD drive in your computer. It is much better and quicker to use the main OLL website to browse for and read titles online.

The 4th Edition of the PLL DVD
The 4th edition of the Portable Library of Liberty DVD (data not video) was released in Janaury 2009. The 3rd editon was released in June 2006 with about 750 items and was very much a product of the original design of the OLL website. With the complete redesign of the OLL website in July 2007 we were able to completely redesign the process for creating the PDF version of the files which make up the PLL. The end result is a much nicer frontpage for the PLL DVD, an on-disk search engine to help find authors and titles, and greatly expanded content with 924 volumes drawn from the main OLL website. New and updated versions of the PLL DVD can now be created a the touch of a button, so we hope to have more regular updates available for distribution from now on.
