MONTANA

MONTANA. a territory of the United States, formed of part of the Louisiana cession. (See ANNEXATIONS, I.) It consists of 143,776 square miles, bounded north by British Columbia. east by Dakota, south by Wyoming and Idaho, and west by Idaho. It was organized by act of May 26,1864, its territory being taken from Idaho. Its population in 1880 was 39.189. Its capital is Helena, and its governor in 1882 is Benj. F. Potts.
