MARSHALL

MARSHALL, John, was born at Germantown, Va., Sept. 24, 1755, and died at Philadelphia July 6, 1835. He was admitted to the bar in 1781, took high rank as a lawyer, and obtained the militia title of "General Marshall," by which he was commonly known until 1801. In 1797-8 he was an envoy to France (see X. Y. Z. MISSION); after his return he was a federalist congressman from Virginia 1799-1800, when he became secretary of state under Adams. (See ADMINISTRATIONS, III.) He was appointed chief justice of the United States Jan. 31, 1801, and served until his death. (See JUDICIARY; CONSTRUCTION, III.; FEDERAL PARTY.) His decisions are in Cranch's, Wheaton's and Peters' reports, in Peters' condensed reports (covering Cranch's and Wheaton's). and in Brockenbrough's "Marshall's Decisions" (circuit).
