JOHNSON, Richard Mentor

JOHNSON, Richard Mentor, vice-president of the United States 1837-41 (see DISPUTED ELECTIONS, III.), was born at Bryant's Station, Ky., Oct. 17, 1781, studied law, and became a colonel of volunteers in the war of 1812. He was a democratic representative in congress 1807-19 and 1829-37, and United States senator 1820-29. He was the democratic candidate in 1840 for vice-president, but was defeated.
