HAMLIN

HAMLIN, Hannibal, vice-president of the United States 1861-5, was born at Paris, Me., Aug. 27, 1809, was admitted to the bar in 1833; was a democratic congressman 1843-7, and United States senator 1848-57, and, as a republican, 1857-61. He was again elected senator by the republicans 1869-81, and was appointed minister to Spain in 1881.
