ADVERTISEMENTAt the back of the 1656 edition of The Excellencie, the publisher, Thomas Brewster, supplies an advertisement, or “Catalogue of Bookes.” It lists three volumes (of which the third was an anonymous publication): Sir Henry Vane, The Retired Mans Meditations Thomas May, A Breviary of the History of the Parliament of England Lazarus and His Sisters Discourse of Paradice All three books were published in “1655,” that is, by the modern calendar, between March 1655 and March 1656. Vane’s book can be confidently dated to early July. Thomas May’s book was a second edition. APPENDIX BThe Edition of 1767 |
