About this title:

This study guide compares two caricatures from the 1830s which show the ways in which the ruling elites oppress the people through taxation. One appears in a book by the English radical and reformer John Wade; the other is by the French republican caricaturist Honoré Daumier. There is a copy of the image, some discussion of the historical context, a description of what is in the image, an analysis of its content and meaning, and links to further readings on the topic. It is in the form of a PDF of a “slide show” which can be used in the class room for further study and examination.
