[Reply to 503]

My Dear Sir

You will see by the Newspapers that there was a long debate in the House last night on the subject of the Lord Advocate’s subscribing to the Beacon. In his (the Lord Advocate’s) speech he did not mention the Scotsman, and therefore it was not necessary for me to say any thing in defence of the management of that paper. If he had accused it of dealing in personal abuse I should have vindicated it from that charge. The Lord Advocate had a bad cause, and the majority of 25 which divided against enquiry, will not clear him in the public opinion.—

I have only time to write these few lines.—

Yrs. very truly

David Ricardo
