My dear Sir

I am just going to leave London for Gatcomb Park, and I have this instant been informed by my brother Ralph Ricardo that he intends visiting Paris next week in company with Mr. George Basevi,2 brother to the Mr. Basevi you have lately seen.3 I am afraid that you may think me troublesome, but I could not refuse to give them this letter of introduction to you, as it is of considerable advantage to a stranger to be known to some respectable person when he visits a foreign country. If I am presuming too much it is your fault, your kind letter,4 and flattering manner to me whilst in this country have added to my natural vanity.

I am Dear Sir with great esteem Your’s very truly

David Ricardo

[1 ]MS in Moscow Historical Museum. (In the collection of autographs formerly of Count Orlov Davidov, Russian Ambassador to England, who purchased it at a London auction in 1868. See Daily Worker, 27 April 1934.) I am indebted to R. Page Arnot for a photostat.

The contents of the letter suggest that it was addressed to Say; cp. also letter 117 (postscript) and letter 135.

[2 ]George Basevi, junr. (1794– 1845), the architect, son of Ricardo’s friend of the same name.

[3 ]N. Basevi; see above, p. 245.
