[Reply to 18]

Sir,

I am desired by Mr. Perceval to acknowledge the receipt of your letter to him of the 27 th. of last month, proposing for his consideration a regulation by which the Bank of England should be obliged to furnish Standard Gold Bullion in exchange for its notes, at the rate of £4.. 15. per ounce.

Mr. Perceval directs me to observe, in reply, that you must be aware that, during the recess of Parliament, the plan you have proposed could not be adopted; nor can you, he apprehends, be surprized that, taking a view so very different from your own, of the present state of our currency and of the causes to which it is to be ascribed, he should not be disposed to adopt the remedies which appear to you to be desirable.

I have the honour to be, Sir, Your very obedient humble Servant

A: Rosenhagen

David Ricardo Esqre.

[1 ]Addressed: ‘David Ricardo Esqre./New Grove / Mile-end.’

MS in R.P. A. Rosenhagen was Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
