Uns ist ein Kind geboren2 . Christmas Day (1712 or 1714)

The words and melody of the concluding Choral are those of Caspar Fuger’s Christmas Hymn, “Wir Christenleut’ ” (see Cantata 40).

The words are the fifth stanza of the Hymn:

  • Alleluja,
  • Gelobet sei Gott3 !
  • Singen wir all’ aus unsers Herzens Grunde:
  • Denn Gott hat heut’
  • Gemacht solch’ Freud’,
  • Der wir vergessen soll’n zu keiner Stunde.
  • B.G. xxx. 40.

Form. Extended (Flauti, Oboi, Strings, Continuo).

[2 ] Bach’s authorship of this Cantata has been challenged (Bachjahrbuch, 1912, p. 132).

[3 ] 1592 Alleluia. Bach’s line appears in a text of 1593.
