The words of the Choral are the eighth stanza of Paul Gerhardt’s (see the “St Matthew Passion,” No. 16) Christmas Hymn, “Schaut! schaut! was ist fur Wunder dar?” It was first published in the fifth “Dozen” of Johann G Ebeling’s (see No. 33 infra) edition of Gerhardt’s Geistliche Andachten, Berlin, 1667: - Schaut hin! dort liegt im finstern Stall,
- Dess’ Herrschaft gehet überall
- Da Speise vormals sucht’ ein Rind,
- Da ruhet jetzt der Jungfrau’n Kind.
