To JOHN DAVIDSON

  • Address: To Mr John Davidson, Writer to the Signet, Castle Hill, Edinburgh

MS., EUL La. ii.191; Scott 267.

My Dear Sir

I should be glad to see the Duke of Buccleugh before he leaves this country. I should, therefore, be very much obliged to you if you would let me know when he returns to Dalkieth and how long he proposes to stay there.

If you see Andrew Stuart you may tell him that I am longing very much to see him; as he promised me a call.

I intended about a week ago to make a long visit to my friends on your side of the water.2 I had got wind in my stomach which I suspected a little dissipation might be necessary to dispel. By taking three or four very laborious walks I have entirely rid of it: so that I shall not [leave]3 my retreat for above a day these six months [to come].3

I ever am

My Dear Sir, Most faithfully and affectionately yours.

Adam Smith
