Schedule A. Emendations of Accidental ReadingsThis collation records all instances where the punctuation, spelling, or other formal characteristics of text 3 have been altered in the printer’s copy for the present edition. The preferred reading now introduced appears first, without text reference if entered by the editors, with reference if transferred from some other text. After the rule the reading disallowed is then given, together with citation of 3 and any other editions where it occurs. In this second entry a tilde or curved dash (∼) represents the same word as that first cited. In either entry a caret (⁁) denotes a punctuation mark there omitted but present in the other account. Throughout in this and the following schedules the typography is so arranged to avoid line–end hyphenation of separable compounds, as the intrusion of hyphens not originally present would, in this circumstance, produce an ambiguous reading. Certain house–style and other features extraneous to the text are disregarded.1 10.4 always, 1|∼⁁ 2–6. 14.20 taken 1–2, 4–6| tsken 3. 15.7 manufactories, 4–6|∼⁁ 1–3. 15.35 man, 1–2|∼⁁ 3–6. 16.25 more, 1|∼⁁ 2–6. 18.1 perform, 1–2|; 3–6. 20.24 valve, 1|∼⁁ 2–6. 20.24 communication, 1|∼⁁ 2–6. 21.8 is, 1|∼⁁ 2–6. 21.12 a particular 1–2, 4–6| aparticular 3. 22.20 accommodation, 1|∼⁁ 2–6. 48.14 purchasing; 3e, 4–6|∼⁁ 2A–3. 55.18 conveniencies 1–2| conveniences 3–6. 149.19 scholars,’ 6|∼,⁁ 1–5. 149.19 ‘and 6|⁁∼ 1–5. 149.22 wisdom,’ 6|∼,⁁ 1–5. 149.22 ‘ought 6|⁁∼ 1–5. 155.26 obvious,’ 5–6|∼,⁁ 1–4. 155.27 ‘that 5–6|⁁∼ 1–4. 193.12 does,|∼⁁ 1–6. 193.12 not,|∼⁁ 1–6. 234.30 the real Price of| om. 1–6. 240.1 cattle is 1–2, 4–6| cattleis 3. 242.26 butcher’s–meat 4–6|∼⁁∼ 1–3. 264.2 the 1–2, 4–6| the the 3. 310.33 premium. 2, 4–6|∼⁁ 3. 431.3 sovereign 1–2, 4–6| soreign 3. 435.15 never 1–2, 4–6| neevr 3. 556.4 Motives 4–6| motives 1–3. 564.29 Prosperity 5–6| prosperity 1–4. 586.27 place 1–2| places 3–6. 599.12–13 and sell 1–2, 4–6| andsell 3. 663.4 Land,|∼⁁ 1–6. 688.16 inconveniencies 6| inconveniences 1–5. 757.22–23 four trades 4–6| fourt rades 3. 764.36 Greek 1–2, 4–6| Greck 3. 797.34 allegiance to 1–2, 4–6|∼ to to 3. 814.26 Conclusion of the Chapter| Conclusion 1–6. 828.4 Rent; 1, 5–6| rent. 2–4. 836.13 taille 1| tallie 2–6. 836.18 taille 1| tallie 2–6. 851.25 163, 166,|∼. ∼. 3–6. 858.15 upon the Capital| om. 1–6. 861.13 three–pence 1–2|∼⁁∼ 3–6. 862.25 ground–rents 1–2, 4–6|∼⁁∼ 3. 864.34 one–tenth 1–2, 4–6|∼⁁∼ 3. 877.37 conveniencies 1,6| conveniences 2–5. 890.20 3083l.6s.8d. 4–6|∼l.∼s.∼d. 1–3. 892.19 twenty–five, 1–2, 4–6|∼–∼⁁ 3. 904.29 vingtiemes 1–2, 4–6| vingtiems 3. 906.26 conveniencies 1–2, 4–6| conveniences 3. 921.27–923.22 [l.s.d. entries in italic type] 4–6| [entries in roman] 1–3. 922.17 72, 289, 673l. 1–2, 4–6|∼, ∼, ∼⁁. 3. 924.2 fund 1–2, 4–6| und 3. 933.9 land–tax 1–2|∼⁁∼ 3–6. 934.20 land–tax 1–2, 4–6|∼⁁∼ 3. 941.34 History 1| Hist. 2–6. 942.12 Pennsylvania, 1–2, 5–6|∼. 3–4. 949.18 wit ⁁ 4–6|∼, 3. [1 ]The collation excludes successive modifications of the titles in 1–6 and of Smith’s own Table of Contents, but does represent the editors’ necessary revision of chapter and section headings within text to bring these into conformity with the Contents as finally arranged for 3. Also excluded are the volume caption headings for the three volumes of 3 (here beginning on pages 1, 330, 663) and all references originally appearing on or below the direction lines. Shoulder–notes have been transferred, in summary form, to the running–title line, abbreviated headings extended but terminal periods removed, paragraph numbers supplied in left margins, small capitals at the beginning of each paragraph reduced to lower case, reiterated quotation marks deleted, and long ‘s’, digraphs and ligatures generally converted to modern style. |
