BORDER RUFFIANS

BORDER RUFFIANS (IN U.S. HISTORY), pro-slavery Missouri men who, in 1855 and afterward, made a practice of crossing the border into Kansas to carry elections, or to overawe free state settlers. The name does not seem to have been entirely one of contempt, as it was occasionally accepted and used by the border ruffians themselves.
