BELL

BELL, John, was born near Nashville, Tenn. Feb. 15, 1797, and died near Nashville, Sept. 10, 1869. He was graduated at the university of Nashville in 1814, was admitted to the bar in 1816, was a representative in congress (whig) 1829-41, was secretary of was under Harrison and Tyler (see ADMINISTRATIONS), and was United States senator 1847-59. During the latter part of his term of office he was one of the "south" Americans (see BORDER STATES, WHIG PARTY) who held aloof from both the democrats and republicans, only wishing to stop all agitation for or against slavery; and in 1860 he was the candidate of the constitutional union party for the presidency.
