About the Author

Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846) was the leading opponent of the slave trade and slavery in England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His opposition was was based on religious (he was an evangelical Anglican), moral, political, and economic grounds and he had an enormous impact in Europe and the United States.
